Out of the Clock Tower

Hello and welcome to the Greene County Archives' blog, "Out of the Clock Tower".  Please join us as we share information on archival issues, news, special events, and highlights from our collection.

Before the archives program began in Greene County in 1996, permanent records were stored in every conceivable space, in basements, garages, and closets. Usually they were in boxes of various shapes and sizes, although seldom adequately labeled, but occasionally they were just in loose piles of books and papers. Most notable were the old records stuffed into the clock tower of the County Courthouse, where they shared their home with pigeon droppings.

Now, there is a clean, environmentally controlled, well appointed location for the county archives, where our historical records are housed in standard sized boxes on steel shelves. We have taken note of their journey in the name for our blog.

Ohio History Fund Tax Check-Off

Posted on May 12, 2017 at 3:49 PM by Jessica Cromer

It’s that time of year again—Tax Time! Are you an Ohio resident who loves the history of our state? Will you be receiving a refund on your state tax return this year? If you answered yes, please consider donating to the Ohio History Fund.

The Ohio History Fund was created in 2012 to support the preservation of and increased access to Ohio’s heritage by funding local, regional, and statewide projects. In the last five years, 47 grants, totaling $448,000, have been awarded in 32 Ohio counties. This program is mainly funded through the tax check-off on Ohio income tax returns. Individuals can donate a part of their refund simply by writing in the amount on line 26c of their Ohio income tax return.

The goal for this year is to receive $88,000 in donations from the tax check-off. If achieved, this means that ninety-eight Ohio residents would need to donate an average of nine dollars. That’s the price of a lunch! So for the price of a lunch, you could be helping to replace a roof on a historical building or fund a digitization project of nineteenth century records.

Not getting a refund this year? There are other ways to support the History Fund:

  • Show your love of Ohio history by purchasing the Ohio History “mastodon” license plate.
  • You can also make a tax-deductible donation to the Ohio History Connection for the History Fund.
