Out of the Clock Tower

Hello and welcome to the Greene County Archives' blog, "Out of the Clock Tower".  Please join us as we share information on archival issues, news, special events, and highlights from our collection.

Before the archives program began in Greene County in 1996, permanent records were stored in every conceivable space, in basements, garages, and closets. Usually they were in boxes of various shapes and sizes, although seldom adequately labeled, but occasionally they were just in loose piles of books and papers. Most notable were the old records stuffed into the clock tower of the County Courthouse, where they shared their home with pigeon droppings.

Now, there is a clean, environmentally controlled, well appointed location for the county archives, where our historical records are housed in standard sized boxes on steel shelves. We have taken note of their journey in the name for our blog.

American Archives Month!

Posted on September 24, 2021 at 2:14 PM by Melissa Dalton

October is almost here, and that means that American Archives Month is right around the corner! We have so many great events planned for the upcoming month, and we would like to take the opportunity today to share them with you.

American Archives Month is a time for archivists and archival institutions to raise public awareness about the importance of historic documents and records, as well as promote the work we do to ensure these records are preserved for future generations. As such, we will be hosting a few events to help us promote our holdings and what we do!

We kick off Archives Month on Thursday, September 30th by attending the Greene County Board of County Commissioners Meeting. Robin and I will be in attendance to help promote public awareness of the work we do as archivist, our archival holdings, and to highlight the various events and programs we have scheduled throughout the month.

On Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 2PM, we will host our 3rd edition of Spooky Tales from the Greene County Archives, titled “Bad Blood: The John Fogwell Murder”. This program delves into the records that help flesh out the story and events that led to Fogwell’s untimely death. We will host this program via Zoom, and registration is required. Once registered, you will receive an email on how to join.

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, we have a couple of events scheduled. First, we will be participating in #AskAnArchivist Day, which provides patrons and followers the opportunity to engage with an archivist to learn more about our holdings, institution, and what we do. We will be active on Facebook and Twitter all day, and encourage all to bring your questions! We’ll also host a Facebook Live event at 2pm, which provides an opportunity to ask your questions, but in real time!

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 10AM to 2PM, the Archives will host an Open House! This is the first time since the pandemic that we’ve offered this sort of event for the public, and we are excited to be able to do so! As part of the Open House, we will have special exhibits and displays, provide tours of our facility, and have some light refreshments. And, we couldn’t have this event without getting the Victrola playing some of the great 78s! You really don’t want to miss it!

In addition to Archives Month, 2021 also marks our 25th anniversary! The Greene County Archives was established in 1996, and we are so excited to mark our Silver Anniversary with all of you! During the Open House, you will have a chance to see a slideshow of the Archives over the years, and flip through the Greene County Archives scrapbook.

On Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 2PM, we will host another Facebook Live event. This event will once again allow our followers to ask any questions they may have, and we’ll also tell you about new things happening here.

October is going to be a crazy month, full of great content and programs! Be sure to follow us on social media for all our updates as we will be sharing lots of fun stuff throughout the month!

Until Next Time!
