Board of County Commissioners

[ARCHIVED] More money in your pocket

Greene County Commissioners voted to approve a .5 mill property tax roll back at today’s meeting. The roll back is for 2017 taxes that will be collected in 2018. Property owners will save approximately $1.9 million collectively.

“The Commissioners simply wanted to provide some savings to the residents of Greene County. Our revenues are greater that our expenses and they are thrilled to be able to take a little less from our citizens” said County Administrator Brandon Huddleson.

The decision came as a result of careful consideration of current revenues and expenses, as well as projections for the future. Commissioners are confident they are able to cover operating expenses as well as the capital needs, even with the reduction.

Sales tax revenue, the largest component of the County’s budget, has continued to grow at a steady rate. That, coupled with the tremendous amount of residential and commercial construction in the County has provided the Commissioners with the opportunity to provide some tax relief to property owners. The Commissioners all agreed the money is better used in the hands of the tax payers than sitting in the County’s bank account.
