The Board believes it is important to emphasize the resources available to homeless individuals and those at risk of becoming homeless in Greene County.
Over half a million people were living on the streets or in places not fit for human habitation in 2015. The Department of Housing and Urban Development annually coordinates with homeless service providers to work within communities to obtain a picture of those who are homeless.
Following the 2016 survey, 58 men, women and children were housed in shelters and transitional housing programs in Greene County.
Homelessness has a devastating effect on families and individuals. There are many reasons for homelessness: personal tragedy, physical health emergency, loss of a job, abuse, mental illness, or substance abuse. In America, 25 million people live pay check to pay check. If one misfortune occurs to them or their family, they are at risk of spiraling toward homelessness.
Individuals or families can experience chronic homelessness which is a cycle of repeated homelessness. This cycle requires more support and encouragement to provide the homeless with assistance.
In Greene County, there are several agencies that provide assistance to individuals and families at risk for being homeless or who have become homeless. Through the generosity of the community and the diligent work of the homeless service providers in Greene County, there is help for many and hope for the homeless.
